The top 5 things to do in Morzine

If you’re heading to Morzine for a winter holiday, it’s likely that your main focus will be skiing or snowboarding. But if you do find yourself with some time to spare we highly recommend the following activities, which are all unforgettable experiences in Morzine.

Watch the local Ice Hockey Team

No trip to Morzine is complete without watching the local ice hockey team - the Morzine Avoriaz Penguins - in action. You don’t need to know the rules to enjoy the fast-paced game and brilliant atmosphere.

Matches take place every Saturday night throughout the winter season at the Palais des Sports, and sometimes on a Wednesday evening too. Suitable for all the family although be aware the games can go on quite late into the evening.

You can see all the upcoming matches and buy tickets online at HCMA Official Website.

Night Sledging

Night sledging down the Pleney pistes by the light of a head torch has to be on any Morzine visitor’s bucket list!

You catch the telecabine up the mountain at sunset and are rewarded with a beautiful view of the twinkling lights of Morzine below you. Pick up your sledge, listen to the safety briefing, then you set off surprisingly fast down 4km of Pleney Piste.

It’s a wild ride and hilarious fun! You can find more information and book online with Indiana’Ventures.

Take a Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

Why not come down from the slopes a bit early to take a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride from the Tourist Office square?

Cuddle up in the cosy, sheepskin-lined carriage and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you ride around the charming old town of Morzine, or even up to glorious Lake Montriond. A magical experience.

Available every afternoon except Saturday. No need to book in advance, just turn up. You can find out more on the Tourist Office website.

Winter walk around Lake Montriond

Lake Montriond is a dramatic, cliff-lined alpine lake situated about 6km out of Morzine town. Absolutely stunning in the summertime and breathtaking in the winter season when the lake is frozen over.

It’s well worth a walk around the lake to experience the beautiful scenery - it takes around 45 minutes to walk a complete circuit. Afterwards, warm up with a hot chocolate (or something stronger!) at one of the lakeside cafés.

From Morzine, you can catch the M bus from the Town Hall to the car park at Lake Montriond.

You can find the free bus timetable here.

Watch the ESF Torchlit Descent

Every Tuesday evening at 6pm the ESF ski school instructors perform an impressive torchlight descent down the main Pleney slope, followed by a fireworks display. It’s an unforgettable experience, and kids will absolutely love it.

Watch from the main Tourist Square, where the tourist office serves up hot chocolate and vin chaud. Or you might be lucky enough to catch it from the balcony of your chalet or apartment!

Find out more on the ESF Morzine website.

Child-friendly activities in Morzine

If you’re coming on a family holiday to Morzine with young children in your party, you might be wondering how to keep them entertained. Especially if they're too young to learn to ski right now.

The good news is that there’s plenty of things to do with kids in Morzine besides skiing! So whether you’re looking for something baby-friendly, toddler-friendly, kid-friendly or just family-friendly, we’ve got you covered.

Aquariaz Water Park

Aquariaz is a tropical themed water park located in Avoriaz, which is linked with Morzine. There’s a lazy river, toddler splash zone, water slides and a climbing wall across a swimming pool.

To access Aquariaz you’ll need to get the free A bus to Prodains and then take the cable car up to Avoriaz town. From there, Aquariaz is a short walk. Be aware it does get busy on bad weather days.

For more information visit the Aquariaz website.

Ice Skating

In the Tourist Office Square you’ll find Morzine’s outdoor ice rink, which is open to kids and adults alike.

Ice skates are available to hire for a small charge, and there are character skate-aids for little ones who aren’t so confident on the ice.

It’s open until the early evening so it’s a great way for kids to burn off any extra energy before dinnertime.

Find out more on the Tourist Office website.

Swimming Pool

Morzine has its own indoor swimming pool with great facilities for children, including a shallow paddling pool heated to 31°C with lots of fun splash equipment and a small teaching pool.

It’s a great way to spend a rainy afternoon and there’s a decent café on site.

Find the Swimming Complex down at the Parc des Dérêches, easily accessible on foot from Morzine.

Find more information on the Parc des Dérêches website.

Go Sledging

Going sledging with the kids is always a good idea. You can buy (or even better - hire!) sledges from most ski shops in Morzine.

The best spot for sledging is at the bottom of the Pleney, on the gentle slopes to the right of the Telecabine.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

What could be more magical than riding in a one-horse open sleigh?

Wrap up warm and snuggle down in the cosy, sheepskin-lined carriage and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you listen to the sound of hooves and jingle bells. A truly memorable experience for the whole family.

Available every afternoon except Saturday. No need to book in advance, you’ll find the horse and carriage outside the Tourist Office.

Watch the ESF Torchlit Descent

If you’re a family with kids on a winter holiday in Morzine, you need to set an alarm for 6pm on Tuesday evening for the ESF Torchlight Descent.

Children will be awed by the sight of the ESF ski school instructors snaking down the Pleney slopes in perfect unison by the light of torches. And if that wasn’t enough to impress, the firework display straight afterwards will be!

Watch from the main Tourist Square, where the tourist office serves up hot chocolate and vin chaud. Or you might be lucky enough to catch it from the balcony of your chalet or apartment!

Find out more on the ESF Morzine website.

Take a Trip up the Mountain

Just because they’re too young to ski, doesn’t mean little kids can’t enjoy a trip up the mountain! You can take either the Pleney Telecabine or the Super Morzine Telecabine - both leave from the town centre.

The journey itself is very exciting for little ones and once you’re at the top, you’ll find cafés with sunny terraces to enjoy a hot chocolate. Plus plenty of room to build a snowman.

Under 5’s can ride the ski lifts for free - you’ll just need to provide a passport or ID to prove their age at the lift pass office. And non-skiing adults can buy a return walker’s pass for less than €10.

Catch the Bus to Les Gets

Les Gets is Morzine’s neighbouring village and is a very pretty, traditional town with plenty of cafés, shops and a lovely wooden carousel. It’s well worth a visit for a morning or afternoon, especially if you have young children who aren’t in ski school.

You can easily catch the bus to Les Gets from Morzine. It’s a 15 minute journey and only costs €1,50 each way. The buses depart roughly once every hour, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the timetable as the times aren’t super regular.

Find the Morzine > Les Gets bus timetable here.

Ride the Carousel

In the Tourist Office Square you’ll find a beautiful traditional carousel with horses and other animals to ride. Little kids won’t be able to resist having a go (or ten!).

Section 3

Things to do for non skiers

Not everybody comes to Morzine to go skiing or snowboarding, and we totally understand that. The good news is that there’s plenty of things to do in Morzine for non skiers that don’t involve hurtling down a mountain at great speed!

Whether it’s an injury that’s keeping you off the slopes, or winter sports just aren’t your bag, you’ll still find plenty to keep you entertained.

Visit Lake Montriond

Lake Montriond is a dramatic, cliff-lined alpine lake situated about 6km out of Morzine town. It’s a breathtaking sight in the winter season when the lake is fully frozen over.

A leisurely walk around the lake will take around 45 minutes. After you’ve worked up an appetite, why not treat yourself to a delicious lunch at one of the lakeside restaurants?

To get to the Lake from Morzine, you can catch the free M bus from the Town Hall to the car park at Lake Montriond.

You can find the timetable for the M bus here.

Explore the Local Shops

Morzine has a lovely range of independent shops to suit all tastes. From traditional wooden toy shops to stylish interior’s boutiques and everything in between.

For foodies, there’s plenty of local artisan produce on offer including rare honey, traditional cheeses, alpine liquors and wine from the Savoie region.

Most shops can be found on the rue du Bourg and the surrounding streets. And there’s plenty of cafés and patisseries for a mid-shopping refuel.

Go Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a delightful way to explore the mountain landscape in the wintertime. It’s low risk, low impact and easy to learn.

We recommend booking a guided snowshoe trip to get the most out of the experience, and learn about the alpine environment with some bonus wildlife spotting (if you’re lucky!).

You can find details of companies offering guided snowshoe treks on the Tourist Office Website.

Take a Winter Walk

The woodland walk next to the river Dranse is absolutely stunning and easily accessible for all. Starting from the Morzine Mairie you can choose to follow the river downstream towards the swimming baths and beyond. Or follow the river upstream towards the Nyon waterfall for a spectacular sight.

If there’s snow or ice on the ground, make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes. You can hire walking poles from Intersport.

A nice option for a longer walk is to catch the ‘E’ bus to L’Erigné, which is at the top of the river valley, and follow the river down from there back in Morzine village.

You can find the free bus timetable here.

Visit the Local Market

Morzine’s local market is well worth a visit and you’ll find plenty of locals doing their weekly shopping here. There’s a wealth of quality stalls selling everything from local produce and groceries to homewares and clothing.

The market takes place every Wednesday morning from 8am to midday. You’ll find it in the Carrefour carpark, below the rue du Bourg.

Catch the Ski Lift up the Mountain

The ski lifts aren’t just for skiers and snowboarders - Pedestrians can go up the telecabines too. You’ll just need to buy a pedestrian pass from the relevant lift pass office.

We recommend catching the Super Morzine Telecabine. At the top, head to the left up the small slope (watch out for skiers!) and you’ll find L’Passage - a great mountain restaurant with a sunny terrace and panoramic views over the mountains. Why not take a book and make an afternoon of it?

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride

A traditional horse-drawn carriage ride is a magical experience.

Cuddle up in the cosy, sheepskin-lined carriage and enjoy the beautiful scenery as you ride around the charming old town of Morzine, or even up to glorious Lake Montriond.

Available every afternoon except Saturday. No need to book in advance, just turn up and look for the horse and carriage in the Tourist Office Square.

Section 4

Activities for thrill-seekers

Morzine is an adrenaline-junkie’s paradise with plenty of outdoor pursuits to try on top of the obvious skiing and snowboarding.

We think the following activities should be on every thrill-seeker’s Morzine bucket list.

Night Sledging

If skiing or snowboarding isn’t quite enough of a thrill for you, then night sledging down 4km of Pleney pistes by the light of a head torch should satisfy your inner adrenaline-junkie!

It’s a wild ride, surprisingly fast and can only be described as something akin to real-life Mario Kart.

Due to the speed and potential for crashing, this activity is not recommended for children under 12, and make sure to wear goggles and a helmet.

You can find out more and book online on the Indiana'Ventures website.

Fantasticable Zip Wire

The Fantasticable Zip Wire in Châtel offers a thrill-seeking experience like no other. Once safely positioned in your harness you’ll find yourself flying head-first along a 1200m cable, with incredible views over the Plaine Dranse valley below you.

You’ll need a Portes du Soleil lift pass to access the Fantasticable. It starts from the top of the Rochassons chair lift, and your skis follow behind you so you can clip in and carry on once your flight is over.

Find out more on the Fantasticable website.

Husky Sledding

One for the dog-lovers! Husky sledding is a traditional method of transport in the snow and once you get going you can see why - the dogs run surprisingly fast! You’ll need a decent level of fitness and balance to drive the sled.

Available everyday of the winter season.

You can find out more and book online here.

Ice Diving

You might partake in a bit of cold water swimming at home, but in Morzine you can take it to the next level and go ice diving in the frozen depths of Lake Montriond. This is one activity that isn't for the faint of heart! But it’s sure to be an experience you’ll never forget.

No diving experience is required. Find more information online at Plongée Sous Glace Montriond.

Paragliding

Paragliding isn’t just for the summer season! The paragliding schools in Morzine run sessions all year round, so you can gain a completely different perspective of the ski resort.

Choose from tandem or solo rides, with a sports package for those who want to feel some g-force.

Find out more on Aero-Bi's website.

Drive a Snowmobile

Learn to ride the ultimate fun machine aka. a snowmobile, or a skidoo as it’s commonly known. Avoscoot runs snowmobile rides at dusk and into the evening, where you’ll navigate snow-covered fields and forest tracks.

For those who aren’t so keen on taking the wheel (or handlebars!), there’s also the option to ride as a passenger.

Book online on the Avoscoot website.

Section 5

Time to relax

A ski holiday is still a holiday after all, and that means taking some time to relax. To some that might look like lounging on the sofa with a large glass of red after a long day on the slopes, to others a massage or spa session might be what the doctor ordered.

Here are our favourite ways to relax.

Book a Massage

How does a massage from the comfort of your own chalet or apartment sound? We work with several of the best mobile massage therapists in Morzine.

The talented team at Morzine Massage offer all types of treatment from sports massage to pregnancy massage and everything in between.

Nicole from Mobile Mountain Massage is a highly recommended massage therapist and has worked with everyone from GB triathletes to Joe Wicks.

IVY Spa & Beauté offers a range of massage treatments, as well as reflexology and facials.

Visit the Spa

What better way to relax than in a day spa? For a small town, Morzine has some solid options when it comes to spas. Here are our recommendations:

The Spa area at Morzine swimming complex has several saunas and steam-filled hammams. Just turn up, no need to book.

Whilst the Spa & Wellness Center at Hotel Le Dahu has an outdoor jacuzzi with massages and other treatments available. Advance booking necessary.

Hit the Gym

It’s not everyone’s idea of relaxing but for those who might be missing the gym at home, or need to keep up a training schedule, there’s a small but well-equipped gym located at the Aiglon in Morzine.

Day passes and weekly memberships are available, and you’ll need to book an appointment in advance.
